These prerequisites are required for all types of Clarity host.

This guide does not cover the full configuration and operation of the software – merely the host prerequisites.

Hardware/Operating System Requirements

Clarity requires a server-class Windows Server operating system to be the central web server.

A dedicated server is highly recommended. Whether you will be using Revit Server in your environment or not, the prerequisites are the same for Clarity, so the System requirements below should be referenced.

I highly recommend that you go with the Performance requirements, but no less than the Value for either circumstance of concurrent users.

Projects must be stored on a physical drive meeting the requirements below. NAS or SAN devices will not work and they are also not supported by Autodesk at this time. Please refer to the following Knowledge base articles for additional information

Hardware:

Hard drive space:

Roughly 12 GB of free space for the Clarity installation, with substantial additions dependent on the amount and size of projects and tasks being utilized.

There is still a good amount of information that needs space on the C drive, even if the Projects and Artifacts are assigned to a different drive.

Recommended Minimum

Minimum 500 GB C drive allocation to avoid issues later related to not enough hard drive space on the C drive.

Additional drive for Data (Projects, Artifacts, Backups and Archives etc)

If also being stored on the C drive, increase the drive size accordingly.

We do not recommend that you install the Clarity Task Server software on the host since it is not a supported OS, but If you choose to use the host as a task server, additional drive space is required.

RAM:

This is a difficult question, because it is dependent on the number of users, projects, and size of projects being managed. This is particularly important if the server is going to be performing Revit operations, the size of the Revit RAM requirement often dwarfs the other requirements.

Recommended Minimum

Minimum 16gb of ram on the host.

Note: If you plan on using the host as a task server, refer to the ram and hard drive space for Revit.

Virtualization

Most Clarity server deployments have taken place on Virtual Machines. Clarity supports VMware and Hyper-V based virtual machines.

You must ensure that the virtual machine has sufficiently performing processor, memory, and disk resources for appropriate performance.

Note:

Anyone going with a Virtual setup should be asked how the IOPS performance of their setup would compare to the kind of physical drive Autodesk is looking for.

Microsoft SQL Server

Clarity 2026 provides Microsoft SQL Express 2017 as its database. SQL Server Express limits the maximum database size to 10GB.

If you plan to have more than 100 active projects, you may wish to consider a full SQL Server license (or a separate SQL Server). Microsoft SQL Server version 2016 thru 2022 are supported.

Can I Use My Existing SQL Server?

We are often asked if it is permissible to use an existing full version of Microsoft SQL Server (on a corporate server).

While this environment should work, it is not a fully tested configuration as of yet.

If this is an important issue, please raise it with your primary IMAGINiT contact.

Software/OS Prerequisites

Before deploying your Clarity Server, you must have the following prerequisite configuration set up for your Clarity Host. The Revit Server prerequisites are required for all Clarity Host installations regardless of if you are going to be using Revit Server.

Contact support for more detailed information: support@rand.com

Please reference the following Autodesk article for installing prerequisites on Windows Server 2016 , 2019 or 2022 or Server 2025* (64-bit) *with limited internal testing

If you are going to be using Revit Server with Clarity, please install all necessary versions of Revit Server prior to the Clarity install and verify that you can get to the Revit Server admin without error. Do not create any projects yet.

Autodesk Revit

If you are not using the host as a task server it is not necessary to install Revit.

User Identity

Because Clarity will likely need to access files on your network, you should decide in advance what UserId clarity should run under in order to give the appropriate permissions.

By default, Clarity will run as a low-privilege system account on the local machine – but that account will likely not have sufficient access to retrieve files from the network.

To manage this access appropriately, IMAGINiT recommends defining a domain account for your “Clarity User” – which will define the permissions for the Clarity application.

We recommend that the task servers be at least comparable to workstations used in production, if not stronger, especially if you are planning on running multiple sessions of Revit and or multiple logins (not typically recommended due to permission issues).

When referring to the Revit System Requirements, do not go with anything lower than the Value, but Performance is recommended, or value with double the ram if you have large models with multiple links.

If you choose to use virtualization, be aware that graphic intense tasks will not perform as well without a physical graphics card. Refer to the Virtualization section below.

LICENSE COMPLIANCE

Task servers are essentially "filling in" for a physical user, so license compliance still applies to the task servers. Please be aware that it is your responsibility to bring valid Autodesk licenses to each task server in order to stay in compliance.

System Requirements

Please refer to the link below for specific information.

Revit System Requirements

Supported Versions of Revit

Revit 2022-2026

If you still need to process Revit 2021 projects, please leave a task server on Clarity 2025.1 to accommodate those tasks.

Software Licensing

Any task server being used to process tasks from Clarity will need the ability to run a licensed copy of Revit (network, borrowed or stand-alone), which will open up Revit models either as detached copies or live models depending on the project and settings for task processing.

Once installed, please launch all versions to make sure there are no licensing or other dialog boxes that need to be addressed.

Hard Drive

Minimum 500gb C drive. For 360 projects, the cache can quickly consume space on the hard drive and cause issues on the task server. If you are running a large number of tasks, or your projects are overly large you should probably bump up the size of the C drive.

If you are running multiple sessions of Revit, increase this value accordingly.

Ram

Autodesk has historically recommended RAM in the amount of 20 times the on-disk size of the file you have open plus the combined total of all of the Revit links.***

How to Calculate Ram Requirements

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/revit-products/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Revit-How-to-calculate-required-RAM-specific-to-a-project-size.html

***Models created in previous versions of Revit may require more available memory for the one-time upgrade process.

Graphics Card

It is recommended that you have a suitable graphics card as recommended in the Revit System requirements.

Virtualization

Clarity supports VMware and Hyper-V based virtual machines. You must ensure that the virtual machine has a sufficiently performing processor, memory and disk resources for appropriate performance.

Anyone going with a Virtual setup should be consider the IOPS performance of how their setup would compare to the kind of physical drive Autodesk is looking for.

As mentioned previously, graphic intense tasks such as pdf, dwg, dwf and navis will not perform as well as a machine with a recommended physical graphics card. This will impact the time it takes to process the task since it will be using softwaremode graphics. This process time can be considerable compared to a physical machine depending on your setup.

We did a Clarity Healthcheck with one firm using VMs with a graphics card, and we did a PDF benchmark with 164 sheets on a megaproject.

Physical server: 5 hours
Virtual server: 16 hours

(most of that difference – 10 hours - was in 4 particularly graphically intense sheets).

We also did the RFO Revit benchmarks on a VM task server and two production machines:

This is not as drastic a difference, but it is 42% slower to print relatively basic sheets in the benchmark.

Task Server Login Requirements for Revit

The task server will need to be logged in at all times, in an active Windows session, in order for tasks to process and perform automations like selecting projects in the Desktop Connector. The Task User is any user who is logged on to a task server. Revit will run as that user, and the permissions will be that of the user. The user logged into the machine must have permissions to read/write/change to all necessary folders.

Task Server Requirements for Clarity Windows Task Server Service

The service logon should be assigned to the designated Clarity account, typically a service account.

Software Requirements

Revit

All versions needed for projects with tasks being processed on this task server. (2022-2026)

Updates equal to the updates on users machines, preferably the most current

Since most 360 addins are installed as part of the update it is important to remain current.

ONLY ADDINS NEEDED FOR TASKS

Once installed, please launch all versions to make sure there are no licensing or other dialog boxes that need to be addressed.

Autocad

We will use the highest version installed so it is only necessary to install one version of the flavor of Autocad you wish to use.

Install all necessary object enablers

Refer to the following blog posts for additional requirements:

Updates equal to the updates on users machines, preferably the most current

360 Requirements

In order for Clarity to access 360 cloud models, it is necessary for the Autodesk identity to have a valid license to access the live cloud model.

Due to Autodesk project selection limitation in the 16.x version of the Desktop Connector, we have a mechanism to auto-select projects which requires a configuration setting in the Clarity task tray. If you don't use the desktop connector to link or access files you do not need to install it.

https://imaginit.helprace.com/i563-clarity-2024-task-server-config-to-auto-select-360-dc-projects

For Revit/Autocad/Navisworks tasks, the designated 360 identity will need to be logged in via the Autodesk product or the desktop connector.

For Clarity Windows task server tasks will use the Oauth identity assigned to the project in Clarity.

Below is a screen shot of available tasks, keep in mind that custom tasks may vary from what you see and some may require a different module for Clarity.

Post Task Actions

Historically, output files of the task would be sent from the task server to the host server, then the host server would deliver them to their final destination via the Post Task Action.

However, starting in Clarity 2023, Post Task Actions will run on the task server itself by default - so the files no longer need to be sent back to the host first. This will be done unless the option to "Perform Post Task Actions Locally" is un-checked in the task server options panel.

Clarity 2025 provides Microsoft SQL Express 2017 as its database.

When referring to the Revit System Requirements.

Do not go with anything lower than the Value, but Performance is recommended, or value with double the ram if you have large models with multiple links.

Supported Versions of Revit

Revit 2021-2025

If you still need to process Revit 2020 projects, please leave a task server on Clarity 2024.1 to accommodate those tasks.

The task server will need to be logged in at all times, in order for tasks to process. The Task User is any user who is logged on to a task server. Revit will run as that user, and the permissions will be that of the user. The user logged into the machine must have permissions to read/write to all necessary folders.

Task Server Requirements for Clarity Windows Task Server Service

The service logon should be assigned to the designated Clarity account, typically a service account.

This runs under the Clarity Windows task server service, but is a fee based service with Autodesk.

If the Forge Design Automation option is chosen, you must obtain and supply your own Autodesk Forge Developer Application Key to identify your application and link your Cloud Credit billing from Autodesk.

The task server will need to be logged in, in order for tasks to process. The Task User is any user who is logged on to a task server. Revit will run as that user, and the permissions will be that of the user. The user logged into the machine must have permissions to read/write to all necessary folders.

Task Server Requirements for Clarity Forge Task Server

This runs under the Clarity Windows task server service, but is a fee based service with Autodesk.

If the Forge Design Automation option is chosen, you must obtain and supply your own Autodesk Forge Developer Application Key to identify your application and link your Cloud Credit billing from Autodesk.

360 Requirements

In order for Clarity to access 360 cloud models, it is necessary for the Autodesk identity to have a valid license to access the live cloud model. The ADSSO and Desktop Connector

Available Tasks

Below is a screen shot of available tasks, keep in mind that custom tasks may vary from what you see and some may require a different module for Clarity.

Post Task Actions

Historically, output files of the task would be sent from the task server to the host server, then the host server would deliver them to their final destination via the Post Task Action.

However, starting in Clarity 2023, Post Task Actions will run on the task server itself by default - so the files no longer need to be sent back to the host first. This will be done unless the option to "Perform Post Task Actions Locally" is un-checked in the task server options panel.

Multiple Actions

It is now possible to configure multiple post task actions for each task. Please note that some combinations of tasks in some orders may be not be compatible with each other. For example, if the first action moves the files to another location, the second action will not know that the files have moved.

Addins

We recommend only installing addins needed for tasks. Some addins, include some from Autodesk, have been known to cause ownership issues when processing tasks.

There is additional configuration for the Navis Glue and Autodesk Viewer tasks.

Additionally, you will need to install the necessary add ins per version as needed for the following type of tasks:

Navisworks Exporter

https://www.autodesk.com/products/navisworks/3d-viewers#navisworks-nwc-export-utility

Navisworks Glue

Publish to Autodesk Viewer

Requires additional setup also

You will first need to request a key from this site https://developer.autodesk.com

Collaboration for Revit

This is now included in the software and updates.

Dynamo

Only one version of Dynamo should be installed on the task server.

Tasks Requiring Extra Configuration

Revit Database Export Task

If you are going to be running this task on a remote task server it will be necessary to do some additional configuration on the host.

http://s3.amazonaws.com/IMAGINiTSoftware/Documentation/Clarity/2023/index.htm#t=White_Papers%2FRemote_SQL_Database_Access.htm&rhsearch=Revit%20DBExport&rhsyns=%20
